I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

Friday, December 19, 2025 - 7:30 PM EST

It’s Christmas time at the Cincinnati Zoo, and everyone is excited to start celebrating the season – everyone except Lois Jean, the zookeeper’s daughter. Lois Jean is missing her mother, a zoologist who has moved to Africa in order to study wild hippos. Lois Jean knows that her mother would come home for Christmas if the zoo’s resident hippo Big Suzy had her baby – however, Lois Jean’s father George explains that Big Suzy’s baby isn’t due until a month after Christmas. Lois Jean remains determined to reunite her family in time for the holidays, so when Santa comes to visit the children at the zoo, Lois Jean tells him she wants a hippopotamus for Christmas. Santa promises to do what he can, and the next day, Big Suzy’s baby is born – a little girl hippo Lois Jean names Bella. Because Bella is born so early, she faces serious health issues – her survival depends on a new serum that Dolly, Lois Jean’s mother, has developed in Africa. Despite the distance, George is finally able to communicate with Dolly and inform her of the situation. Dolly immediately hops a plane, and all of Cincinnati waits eagerly for her arrival, hoping Bella will be able to survive until Dolly gets there. Suddenly a blizzard grounds Dolly’s plane in New York and all appears lost – until “what to my wondering eye should appear, but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer!” Santa Claus has picked Dolly up in New York and flown her home just in time to save Bella – and Christmas. George and Dolly reunite, and we are once again reminded that there’s nothing better than Christmas at the Cincinnati Zoo!

Jessica Crawford

Saturday, March 21, 2026 - 7:30 PM EST

Bridgewater native Jessica Crawford returns to The Sipe Center stage for a heartfelt hometown performance, bringing with her a collection of songs steeped in memory and meaning. After years of exploring different paths and places—including two seasons in Nashville—she found her way back to the Shenandoah Valley in late 2024, carrying with her a fresh sound and a newly completed recording project of Sentimental Americana songs mixed and mastered on Music Row at the historic RCA Building. Many of the songs were written during the pandemic while Jessica was living in—and caring for—her late grandmother’s 1890s farmhouse in Augusta County. That experience of solitude gave her time to reflect on family history, which gave rise to a more reflective, storytelling style rooted in the landscapes and legacies of her upbringing.

Her show at The Sipe Center will feature a curated blend of original songs and carefully chosen covers that help tell her story and lessons learned along her journey. Jessica’s latest project, Dogwood Tree, is a tender tribute to family, heritage, and the beauty of coming full circle.

Tuesdays with Morrie presented by the Off Broadway Players

Mar 27, 2026 - Mar 29, 2026

The 3:00 pm showing on March 29th will include a talk back with a grief counselor following the performance.

In October, 2010, the Off Broadway Players was born as The Schultz Theatre in the former Rouss Opera House, located in New Market, Va. Named for its founder’s grandfather, the theatre had immediate success, and in 2012 was named by the readers of Virginia Living Magazine as one of the outstanding performing arts troupes in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Six years later, the theatre company began holding its productions in the more modern facility of the J. Frank Hillyard Middle School Auditorium in Broadway, Va. In recognition of the support of the town and community, in 2020 the theatre board adopted the name The Off Broadway Players. A non-profit corporation, the theatre company is operated by volunteers, including the Board of Directors, staff, performers and production personnel. By offering theatre, dance, entertainment, and quality instruction in the performing arts, we hope to enrich the lives of the community we serve while building for the future.

Based on the autobiographical book by Mitch Albom, Tuesdays with Morrie explores the lessons of love, duty, relationships, and the meaning of life and death. Mitch, a former student of Professor Morrie Schwartz, was leading a successful career as a sports journalist when he learned that Morrie had contracted ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mitch visits Morrie, intent on spending just a little time with his favorite teacher. Instead, the close relationship they had during Mitch’s college years is rekindled. Mitch then spends every Tuesday with Morrie in what Mitch describes as his last class with his professor, a class that reminds Mitch of the most important things in life.
